We are the Robertsons; David & Shobana. We’re wedding photographers based in Newcastle, Australia but regularly travel all over this beautiful country and beyond photographing couples special days – Have a peek around and let us know if you’d like US to do the same for YOU :) – David & Shobz
It’s pretty nerve racking experience holding your very first photography workshop, let alone to do it in another country. Like most people we find public speaking hard enough, but sharing your life with complete strangers is another thing all together. At Home workshops for us were more then just giving an educational experience, certainly not just facts and figures. For us workshops are all about using our experience and opportunities to invest into other photographers on a heart level. Our goal is to grow your ability to capture humanity, overcome challenges, see incredible growth in your business and understand yourself better as a photographer.
After two intense days of working hard, laughing harder and eating a lot of food, we left with feeling such a mix of emotions. Grieved that our new family was to part ways and so filled with joy to see a dream come into fruition. It’s so encouraging to see only a few months later how these brilliant photographers are growing in their business and their passion for photography. We hope you enjoy some of the moments shared below and words spoken that blessed us so dearly.
At this stage we have workshops upcoming in Melbourne, Newcastle, Singapore and Malaysia and you can find all the details up here - www.athomeworkshops.com
“I signed up for At Home Workshops with the expectation that I would simply gain further insight into the business and technical sides of photography and meet a few new faces like most other workshops I have been to, how was I wrong. After 2 days in Penang I walked away with a profound change in my personal philosophy about photography and why I do it. Jonanthan, David & Shobana are genuine in the way they dispense their thoughts and teaching, in an environment that is inviting. I would have no hesitation in recommending At Home Workshops, especially if you have lost your way or are burnt out in your photography.” – Shaun
“Instead of teaching techniques and improving photography skills, the workshop was something quite entirely different – it was a reality check of sorts. Jon, Dave and Shobz made the focus of the workshop on finding our own individual values and on using our strengths to appeal to our ideal clients. It was a refreshing change from other photography workshops and the result was a whole bunch of like-minded people coming together from different parts of the world to share stories and experiences and help each other along this journey – it just felt like family.” – Samuel
“The most invaluable teaching was your passion and staying true to yourselves, so I’ve got that etched in my notebook in bold cursive words :) You’ve each fueled us with much needed energy to take our photography to new heights. Personally, I’d like to do you proud and have good news to share in the next coming year or so! :) The warmth and honesty you each brought to your Penang home instantly welcomed us! From the bottom of my heart, I wish the best for each of you and do hope that our paths will cross again soon!” - Kelly
“48 hours are just too short, but it’s long enough for me to miss you all since we left our new home! I’ll never forget how much hard work Shobana, Dave & Jon had put in to make everything possible! The three of you are absolutely AMAZING. Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart for sharing everything with such a generous heart! The selfless input, passion and love from you guys make it home and made everyone of us so relaxed and feel respected & equal. “ - Ting
“To be honest, it didn’t even feel like a workshop because Shobana, Jon & David were all so warm and and open in their sharing. I really felt like the three of you really poured out your heart into building each one of us and that meant a lot to me. Thank you for speaking such truth into my life during the one on one session. It’s been quite the roller-coaster journey for me in photography and getting to know other photographers who share the same hardships and have overcome similar challenges really added depth to the workshop. Thanks for so passionately investing in and serving us in your own ways. Its so reassuring to know that each of us bring a uniqueness to the industry and we can be secure in ourselves” - Christine
“I wish to thank each and everyone from the bottom of my heart for making the workshop such a homely and inspiring place to be. Dave and Shobz, you guys are one of the most down-to-earth and humble human beings I had ever met despite all your successes so far. I am already missing all the hospitality that you had showered on all of us, as if you were our Mum and Dad (even though you’re younger than some of us!) Jon, you are a tremendous inspiration to me, and to be able to learn so much from you and your honest opinion on my business, that has proved to be such invaluable advice which can hopefully help me and the rest of us grow in this industry which, sad to say, has lost its soul some what. Thank you guys for restoring the heart of what photography is ” - Haolun
“First of all, I would like to start by saying a huge thank you to all three of you for the wonderful and enriching experience at the 2-day workshop in Penang. I couldn’t have asked for a better team of mentors. I must say I was quite hesitant to attend the workshop at first when I found out about it; the thought of meeting other experienced photographers in a personal and intimate environment was quite daunting. Even though you all have distinct personalities and styles, you complement each other so well as a team, and I think it is because of your love for what you do and your passion to give and share with others. Seeing the passion and drive that you all have in your work and life truly inspired me. You have also reignited my passion for photography and given me a confidence boost. And I thank you for that “ - Sarah
When we met Dan and El one sunny morning for coffee on Darby Street in 2013, to talk about the possibilities of shooting their wedding we had no idea that these two people were just about to change our world.
Daniel & Elyssa have moved our hearts and inspired our souls to love each other with greater passion! By simply being who they are, they bring hope that romance and chivalry is not dead! They have something really special as a couple, its something you can’t fake and only comes by deeply investing in their relationship with each other. They’re the kind of people who love decisively, compassionately and unconditionally! We can’t wait for their 50th anniversary where we will be by their sides hopefully taking photos of that special day! Thank you Dan and El for letting us be apart of your incredibly special day! Dan & El, we’re pretty big fans of you both :) xx
Arvind & Leenah flew out from Malaysia to see us here in Australia for their pre-wedding session a few months back. We had such a lovely time getting to know them both and got to make some really special portraits both at the same time :) They toughed out some pretty tough conditions too including a cold sunrise, tummy bugs and running up sand dunes in their beautiful clothes. We’re working on their wedding images as we type and we can’t wait to share them soon!
This was Dave and I’s first wedding in Palm beach and though we had heard amazing things about the spot we were not prepared for its beauty or the sweetness and openness of Holly & Kale. I love how even though we meet incredible human beings every weekend we still get so overjoyed when we meet people who are so incredibly loving, relaxed and fun. Maybe we are a little like goldfish, the emotions are new every time! We are also so blessed to be able to shoot around this sun kissed nation and Palm beach and the surrounds did not disappoint, they exceed every testimony of its loveliness. Thank you Kale and Holly for memorable day, an exquisite setting (the flowers were particularly stunning), a great party and for sharing this special and remarkably well celebrated day with us – Love, The Robertsons
